Sports |
|
We cover a wide range of sports, each with its own Sports Leader, and coaching.
Opportunities exist to participate in all sports recreationally, and in many sports
competitively, at all levels, from beginners upwards. There are medical classification
systems in place, which ensure that only people with a similar extent of impairment
compete against each other, in order to make competition as fair as possible.
The sports include the following.
|
|
|
|
Bowls: Friday evenings. Farnborough Leisure Centre. For detals of the next session please contact: info@rushmoormallards.org.uk |
Sport Leader - Colin Tingey |
|
Sessions are very popular, and coaching available for all. Special kit is provided to assist
those with the most severe impairments. There are also a number of
internal and external competitive events held during the year,
for those who are interested.

Boccia: Friday evenings, Farnborough Leisure Centre |
Sport Leader - Vicky Pallot |
|
Boccia is a non-contact, target driven sport, which relies on skill and subtlety, rather
than size, strength or speed. The aim of the game is to propel a set of coloured balls and
position them closer to a white ‘marker’ ball than those of your opponent. The game MUST
be played from a seated position, which makes it ideal for either manual or motorised
wheelchair users, or those seated on a chair.

Swimming: Sundays 12:15 - 13:30, Farnborough Leisure Centre |
Lifeguards Co-ordinators - Robin Bugg and Marilyn Gilbert.
Team Manager - Rose Bridle. |
|
Swimming was the Mallards first, and has proved historically to be its most successful,
competitive sport. The Mallards have developed eleven international swimmers since the
club's inception in 1974 - of these, no less than seven have represented Great Britain
in the Paralympics, collecting between them a sizeable haul of medals of all colours.
The two most successful have been Robin Surgeoner and Peter Hull, both of
whom were awarded MBEs for their swimming achievements.
Members are encouraged to obtain swimming achievement awards.
There are a number of internal club and external inter-club galas, in which
members are encouraged to participate, with the opportunity to compete, as
in all other sports at the highest levels. The club also runs its own 'Fun
Gala'. The Club is fortunate to have its own dedicated group of Lifeguards,
without whom no swimming would be possible, but additional volunteers are
always being sought to boost the number. Opportunities are provided for
Lifeguards to obtain training leading to the award of full Lifeguard
qualifications.

Table Tennis: Friday evenings, Farnborough Leisure Centre |
Sport Leader - Stephen Bridle |
|
Table Tennis has become one of the Club's most flourishing sports, with
great success achieved at home and overseas, with a number of current National level
competitors. In addition to training at the regular Friday Club evenings,
extra training is provided on other evenings for those obtaining selection
for the Club Squad. There are many opportunities for competitive activities
for those who seek it, but many members simply enjoy a good work-out and
improving their skills.

Wheelchair Basketball: 'Have a go' -
Friday evenings, Farnborough Leisure Centre 'Training' - Sundays, 1800-
2000, Farnborough Leisure Centre |
Sport Leaders and Head Coaches: Vicky and David Kingstone
|
|
The ‘Mallards Marvels’ were formed as a new section within the Rushmoor Mallards
in 2002 to satisfy the growing local interest in wheelchair basketball. Initially
‘have-a-go’ sessions were held, and still are, on Friday evenings at the regular
Mallards sessions at the Farnborough Leisure Centre, but more advanced team squad
training sessions are also held on Sundays 6-8pm at the same venue.
The Marvels have gone from strength to strength and, with the active assistance
of their four Level Two coaches and a further three Level One coaches, now boast
a successful mixed team which plays regularly in the Third Division of the GBWBA
League.
Players come from both the local area and from as far away as Southampton, and
the high standard of some players has been recognised with two lady members
having already played for the GB Womens team. However, many Marvels players are
completely new to the sport, with some even new to using a wheelchair.
Being a regular wheelchair user is not a prerequisite for joining the team!
